Moving During Inclement Weather

Moving during inclement weather can be a challenge.  Snow, sleet, rain and blustery weather can really put a damper on your moving day.  However, here are some tips to help mitigate really challenging weather on moving day.

Manage Expectations.  If you are having professional movers move your goods, explain to them your expectations before they load or unload.  If you are moving yourself or with friends, plan accordingly.

Clear paths.  Snow and ice can hurt you just walking down a sidewalk and slipping unexpectedly, let alone when you are carrying heavy boxes or pushing a handcart.  It may just add one more thing to do on your list that day, but do it.  With all of the hustle and bustle, if you do not clear a path to your vehicle or moving truck, you could find out the hard way that you should have.  Prevent an injury before it happens and shovel, snow blow and/or throw down some ice melt and keep it safe.

Protecting your floors.  Start by laying down cardboard boxes on your floor that outline a path to each room.  This way you can protect your flooring.  Make sure to tack them down to prevent tripping.  A professional seasoned mover will automatically do this for you.

Limit Access.  Choose a few key entrances that will best meet your furniture needs.  By limiting access, you will keep your house warm and save your floors.  Have a large beach towel you will no longer want or need near that one entrance.  This way if your shoes or the movers work boots get dirty they can wipe them down before entering.

Dress in Layers. Whether you are moving yourself or have movers move you, you will be in and out of the home and putting on a bulky coat and taking it off gets annoying.

Burr!  If it is brutally cold on the day you are moving you may want to consider one of two things, purchasing a small space heater to put in your garage or by the entrance you have chosen to move your things in or get hand and foot warmers to help.  Unless you have faced the fact that you have moved to the frozen tundra and it will not thaw until May, you can prioritize items and move in the essentials and leave the rest in your garage until you have a better weather day.  Either way make the best of it and it will be over soon.
